Cleaning in any form can be a daunting task but instead of sitting there with your dreaded thoughts, let’s start with your closet! Here are some helpful tips to get you motivated to declutter, simplify, and refresh your closet.
Time Management We know! Who really has the time and energy to go through a closet full of things you haven’t worn in years! You can do it if you plan accordingly. Depending on the size of your closet, organizing can take a full day or two. If it’s too much to tackle in one day, divide your time and set goals. Get committed and dedicated in order to give your closet the attention it needs.
Remove Loose Items Your closet is open and you ask yourself, where do I start?! Start by removing items that are not hanging or properly stored in your closet. As you remove those items, group them into garment types such as skirts, jeans, blazers, etc. If you don’t have loose items (you are ahead of the game) start by removing 3 to 4 pieces and group them by garment type. As you remove things from your closet, get a sense of what you would like to donate or sell.
Be Honest In order to have a successful clean out you must BE HONEST with yourself. If something has been on the ‘When I lose weight’ list for more than 3 years, LET IT GO! If there is a specific dress that no longer compliments your figure, LET IT GO! You have to let go in order to create space for a versatile and functional wardrobe. If you still need help with deciding what to keep or give away, consult with a close friend or family member to finalize your decision.
Identify Your Closet System Step outside your closet and visualize how you want your closet to look. Do you prefer a color-coded system, do you like to hang your jeans, or do you like to have your close organized by garment type? Whatever you decide it must optimize your closet space and system. Remember, you can always make changes to your closet system; It’s Your Closet!
No Mixed Hangers Get rid of the hangers that are from the dry cleaners, broken, and bent out of shape. Once that is done, make sure your hangers have the same shape/style and color. Having the same hangers will create a clean and cohesive look for your space. If you can’t decide which style of hanger, group your current hangers that are alike by shape/style and color.
Extra points to you if your hangers are already organized!
Get Creative No matter the size, an unorganized closet can be overwhelming. Get creative on how you want to organize your closet. Think about opening up the space in your closet as you would open up space in your bedroom or living room. There are tons of storage options out there that can help you organize your space in an appealing way.
Don't let this year be another year of having an unorganized wardrobe. Have fun and get to it! 💋
